Carl Edward Waller, Jr., known affectionately as Ed to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, in his hometown of Columbia, Alabama. Born on January 16, 1948, to Carl Edward Waller, Sr. and Lula Cathryn Waller, Ed’s life was one marked by kindness, generosity, and an infectious sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew him.
A Graveside service will be held at 12 P.M. Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Memory Hill Cemetery with Military Honors and Brother William Irwin officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 A.M. until 12 P.M. at Ward Wilson Funeral Home. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in honor of Ed.
Ed was a proud graduate of Dothan High School’s class of 1967, where he would meet his future wife, Peggy. Ed’s commitment to service led him to join the Air Force shortly after graduation, where he honorably served his country for four years. After returning home, Ed embarked on a successful career with GTE, which later became Verizon, from which he retired after many years of dedicated service. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he was respected by his colleagues for his commitment and reliability.
Ed’s life was a testament to the simple joys. He was a man with a big heart, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a kind word. His interests were as diverse as they were passionate. An avid fisherman, he could often be found on the tranquil waters, rod in hand, waiting patiently for the day’s catch. The skies called to him as well, and he enjoyed the freedom of flying, a hobby that allowed him to soar above the worries of the world.
Music was another of Ed’s great loves, and he could play the guitar with a gentle finesse that could hush a room. He had a talent for storytelling, and his jokes never failed to elicit laughter and smiles. Ed’s presence was a comforting one, and he enjoyed being around people, always ready to engage in conversation or share a piece of his heart.
He was a man who loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. Ed’s union with Peggy showcased a deep and lasting bond built on love and teamwork. They faced many challenges together including the heartbreaking loss of their infant daughter, Amy and their teenage daughter, Cathryn, who was their sunshine. These tragedies tested their strength, but Ed and Peggy’s commitment to each other never wavered. Their relationship illustrated that true love can endure even the darkest times.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Edward Waller, Sr. and Lula Cathryn Waller; his daughters, Amy Nicole Waller and Cathryn Elaine Waller; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Forrest C. Tussey and Wanda Ruth Tussey; and his brother-in-law, Kenny Tussey. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Surviving Ed is his beloved wife of 57 years, Peggy Waller; his brother, Charles Waller; sister-in-law, Donna Bartley (James); brother-in-law, Randall Tussey (Brigid); and his special dog, Lady, who was a constant and loyal companion.
Those who knew Ed will remember him as a simple man with a big heart. His absence will be felt deeply by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him.
