Carrie Lucile Rayburn Meeker


Carrie Lucile (Lucy) Rayburn Meeker, a resident of Dothan, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Flowers Hospital.  She was 92.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at First United Methodist Church in Dothan with Dr. Jim Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in Montgomery Memorial Cemetery in Montgomery, AL with Byrd Funeral Home directing.  Family visitation will be held an hour before the service in the Church Parlor.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church., 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36301 or your favorite charity.  


Mrs. Meeker was born August 27, 1919 in Camden, AL where she lived the early years of her life, graduating from Camden High School.  She was a 1940 graduate of St. Margaret’s Hospital School of Nursing in Montgomery, AL, during which time she also did training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Mrs. Meeker worked as an RN specializing in obstetrics and pediatrics for almost 40 years in Montgomery, AL, at Maxwell Field Air Force Base Hospital as well as St. Margaret’s Hospital. She retired in 1977 to spend more time with her grandchildren. 


Mrs. Meeker moved with her husband to Marbury, AL after his retirement. She lived there for more than 25 years, enjoying   vegetable gardening, cooking meals from her harvest and cheering for the Atlanta Braves. She was a voracious reader whose passion for books filled her home. After some health problems, she moved to Dothan, AL in 2003 to be near her daughter. 


She was a member of the American Nurses Association, the Alabama Nurses Association, St. Margaret’s Alumnae Association and First United Methodist Church of Dothan.


Mrs. Meeker is predeceased by her parents, David Hiram Rayburn and Sarah Martha Reaves Rayburn; her loving husband of 52 years, Edward Macon Meeker; and her brother, French Princeton Rayburn. 


Survivors include her  daughter and  son-in-law, Barbara Meeker  Flowers and Paul Rutledge Flowers, Jr. of Dothan;  three grandsons, Paul Rutledge Flowers, III (Bhavani) of Ashland, Oregon,  Edward Macon Flowers (Leslie) of Atlanta, GA  and David Rayburn Flowers (Caroline) of Thomasville, GA ;  six great-grandchildren, Aidan  and Gyan Flowers,  Grace Ann and  Caitlin Lucile Flowers , David Rayburn, Jr. and John  Howerton Flowers.  She is also survived by her beloved first cousins, Charles Reaves, Willard Reaves, Frances Reaves Gaines, Marjorie (Polly) Reaves Fairly, Fabris Reaves Dunnam and Linda Reaves Luker (Max).


The family would like to thank the staff of the Terrace at Grove Park for their love and care of Mrs. Meeker for almost 10 years and Mrs. Willie Mae Pittman for her loyal dedication to her.
