Cecile Gonzalez Malone of Dothan AL died surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter Cecile Malone Jones in Atlanta Tuesday, December 30, 2014. She was 99.
Visitation will be Friday, January 2 at Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home, Dothan AL, from 5 to 7 pm. The Mass of Resurrection will be offered Saturday January 3, at 11 am in the St. Columba Catholic Church Chapel, 2700 West Main Street, Dothan with Concelebrants, Father Denis Berry, S. T., Monsignor Patrick Gallagher, and Father Patrick Maher officiating.
Mrs. Malone, daughter of Dickson B. and Ruth W. Gonzalez was born, baptized and married in the family home, Loretto, Bohemia in Pensacola, FL.
In 1947, she and her husband George H. Malone, II and their first four children moved to Dothan AL where he was a partner in Malone Motor Company. She gave birth to two more children in Dothan.
Mrs. Malone was a parishioner at St. Columba Catholic Church more than 60 years. She was active in the Altar Society, the Catholic Women’s Club and the Burse Club, taking her turn on committees and in all the offices, including president of each. She was also a member of St. Columba’s Iona Club. In the early years, she often supplied the altar with flowers from her garden. Later, she planted a garden at the church and installed handrails on the steps.
During her children’s school years, she served as room mother and participated in the PTA. She was a leader of a Brownie Troup and a Cub Scout Troup. In 1958 she helped found and sponsor the Dixie Debs, a social club for Eleanor’s group. She was a member and past president of the Sorosis Club and a participant in the Great Books Discussion Club. She and Mr. Malone were members of the Foreign Policy Association, often inviting the speakers to their home for dinner. Her garden was featured on the second annual garden tour sponsored by the Dothan Area Botanical Garden. In Pensacola, she had volunteered for the Well Baby Clinic and was a founding member of the Welaka social club in Pensacola which continued meeting from high school till recent years.
Mrs. Malone was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1964, and her sisters Genevieve Gonzalez and Margaret Gonzalez Miller. She is survived by her children: William W. Malone (Martha) of Jacksonville FL; Anne Malone Fitts (Alston), Selma AL; Cecile Malone Jones and Eleanor W. Malone of Atlanta GA; Barbara Malone Liddon (William), Dothan and John D. Malone (Delia) of Greenville SC; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; her sisters Ruth G. Cary and Martha G. Quina and brother Dickson B. Gonzalez, Jr., all of Pensacola and 17 nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial donations to: The George H and Cecile G Malone Library Fund for the Houston Memorial Library, Dothan AL or St. Columba Catholic Church, Dothan AL.
