Chappell Christine Phillips Mathews of Geneva and formerly of Samson, went home to be with the Lord on Monday night, May 11, 2015. She was 82. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m.Thursday, May 14, 2015 at the Wicksburg Assembly of God Church with Rev. Tracy Hobbs officiating and her grandson, Dr. Larry Katz delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Wicksburg Assembly of God Church Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. At all other times the family will be gathered at 783 E. Co. Rd. 4, Geneva, AL.
Chappell was born in Geneva County on July 28, 1932 to the late William Allen and Elzie Carpenter Phillips. She was blessed with the talent to play the piano, organ and guitar. She was a wonderful cook, loved to fish and sew. She also loved growing beautiful flowers. Chappell had a very spunky personality and was always ready and willing to help anyone when called upon. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifteen years, Delma Ray Mathews; her sister, Sarah Phillips Blair; and the father of her children, C.M. Ellenburg, Jr.
She is survived by her three children, Rebecca Ellenburg, Gloria Williams (Tony) and Tony Ellenburg (Robin), all of Geneva; eight grandchildren, Andrea Katz (Larry), Cole Ellenburg (Whitney), Amanda Hall (Quinton), Dillon Holland, Jericha Williamson (Daniel), Beverly Gray (Zach), Melissa Raschke (Solomon) and Daimen Ellenburg; great grandchildren, Riley and Reagan Katz, Liam Raschke, Ayden Hall and coming soon, Hudson Williamson; brother, Havard Phillips (Jean) of Samson; and several nieces and nephews.
