Ms. Charla Chamblee Casey, 80, of Daleville died on Saturday, June 8, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
The family will receive friends at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Christian Home Church of Christ, 463 Highway 92, Newton, Alabama, where Charla had been a member since childhood. Funeral services begin at 2:30 p.m. followed by graveside services directed by Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Enterprise.
Born on Fort Rucker, Alabama, Charla grew up in Wicksburg and remained a Wiregrass resident throughout her life. Charla was the quintessential southern woman, known for a spine as strong as her iced tea—Charla Casey did not suffer fools! Intelligent, independent, and outspoken, Charla’s wit was as quick as it was dry. She raised her daughters, Meg, Robin and Lynn, as a single parent and instilled in them similar traits of strength, humor and kindness. Innately curious, Charla sought to understand the world through science, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Education from Troy State University.
She shared her love of science as a popular, yet challenging and no-nonsense teacher who enjoyed a 34-year career at several Wiregrass schools before transferring to and eventually retiring from Daleville High School in 2007.
In retirement, Charla enjoyed spending time with her family, tinkering in her garden, reading a good book, and admiring her ever-expanding collection of rabbit curios. She loved the beach, good food and socializing with her many friends at the Wicksburg Senior Center.
Charla’s legacy endures through the hundreds of family, friends, students and colleagues she touched through her roles of mother, mentor, teacher and friend.
Charla was preceded in death by her parents, Omega and Charles Chamblee, and her sisters, Nancy Chamblee and Carole McVey. She is survived by daughters, Megan Jones (Vincent) of Savannah, Georgia, Robin Casey of Montgomery, Alabama, and Lynn Casey (David Diehl) of LaGrange, Georgia; grandchildren, John Gandy (LoriAnn Gaylor), Rachel Gonzales (Manny), great-granddaughter, Paz Gonzales; nephew, Michael Gilley (Carmen); great-niece, Carole Gilley; and bonus daughter, Stephanie Elsea.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests you honor Charla by memorizing the periodic table or through donations to Christian Home Church of Christ.
