Charles Arthur Calhoun, a resident of Columbia, Alabama passed away Saturday night, December 8, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old.
Funeral service will be 11 AM, Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Columbia, visitation will be one hour prior to service, burial to follow in Columbia Cemetery. Pastor Van Cooley will be officiating.
Mr. Calhoun was born in Henry County and grew up near Columbia on the family farm. He was the son of the late Vernon Henry Calhoun and Leila Calhoun (Roland). Mr. Calhoun was a 1953 graduate of Houston County High School in Columbia. He attended Auburn University where he played football and was a member of the wrestling team. Upon returning home from Auburn University, he began his farming career which included crop farming and raising beef cattle.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Adult Senior Men’s Sunday School Class in Columbia, where he also served as a deacon in the past.
Mr. Calhoun was an avid sports fan who loved watching and playing all sports. During his early years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved spending time with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Mary Nell Calhoun Ponder, and Debbie Davis, brother: Fred Roland
Survivors include his daughters: Lee Calhoun, Carla Gunter (Bibb), Ann Smith (Gordon), sister: Grace Roland Howard, grandchildren: Dr. Amanda Gold (Russ), Alexis Pattison (Eric), and Gavin Gunter, great-grandchildren: Kennedy and Lincoln Pattison, and Emerson Gold.
