Charles Edward Mercer, 92, a lifetime resident of Houston County, passed away Friday, June 2, 2023.
Graveside funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Crestlawn Cemetery with Reverend Steve Smith officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at Crestlawn Cemetery following the services. Flowers are being accepted.
Mr. Mercer, affectionately know as “Mr. C” or “PaPa Charles” was born April 23, 1931 in Dothan to Warren and Jenny Mercer and lived all of his life in Houston County. He was a graduate of Ashford High School and served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Mercer was employed with Red Fox Fertilizer and United Agriculture for several years. He also worked with Womack Homebuilders briefly. He then began his career with the Road and Bridge Department where he worked for 16 years prior to his retirement. Following retirement, he began farming with his late son, Greg and his grandson, Nick. During his farming career spanning over 30 years, he won “Soybean Farmer of the Year”.
Mr. “C” loved to go hunting, especially dove, quail, pheasant, duck, turkey and anything with feathers! He also enjoyed fishing. He was an avid Auburn football fan…. “War Eagle”! He will be remembered as a fine Christian man and simply “One of the Best”.
He is predeceased by his parents, his wife, Mary, two sons, Greg Mercer and Ronnie Mercer and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his daughter, Terry Snellgrove of Ashford; a grandson, Nick Snellgrove of Ashford; a great-granddaughter, Tenleigh Grace Snellgrove and her mother, Amber Cotter of Dothan; several nieces and nephews; his canine companions, “Kelly” and “Daisy”.
