Charles F. Peters, 79, a resident of Dothan passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Edenfield and Rev. Ed Onley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church, 416 Bethlehem Rd., Midland City, AL 36350, or to the Wiregrass Humane Society, P.O. Box 1045, Dothan, AL 36302.
Mr. Peters was born December 31, 1936 in Ft. Gaines, Georgia and moved to Dothan at the age of 6. He was a 1955 graduate of Dothan High School where he Lettered 3 years in Baseball playing left field under the legendary Coach Russell Taylor. He joined the US Navy from 1955-1959 and transferred to the US Army and served from 1960-1969 spending tours in Vietnam from 1965-1966. He kept playing ball throughout his military career as a catcher playing fast pitch softball. He played against Bobby Mercer of the New York Yankees while stationed in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. He was well decorated on the field as well as off, receiving many accolades for his military service and his athletic ability.
Following his military career he returned to Dothan where he was employed with the US Postal Service (Dothan Branch 1630) for 23 years retiring in 1992. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where he was a member of the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Thomas and Sadie Frankie Peters, his brother, David Franklin Peters, and a sister, Ruby Jean Owens.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years Sandra Dolores Peters; his children, Stephen Thomas (JoAnn) Peters and Deborah Grace Richards; grandchildren, Melissa Rena Mathis, Matthew Thomas Peters, William Mychal Peters, Courtney (Chris) Windham, and Justin Cody Massey; great-grandchildren, Ragan Vinson, Livie Vinson, Cade Morgan, and Cailyn Morgan; a brother, Billy Wade (Barbara) Peters; a sister, Helen Dean (Larry) Ryals.
