BERTHA COMMUNITY. . .Charles Quay Baxley, a resident of the Bertha Community of Dale County, died early Monday morning, November 25, 2019, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility in Abbeville. He was 87.
Memorial services, with Masonic Rites, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 29, 2019, in the New Hope Baptist Church with Reverend Bernie Raines officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Friday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Cemetery Fund c/o Nancy Gast, 6349 County Road 67, North, Skipperville, AL 36374.
Mr. Baxley was born in Barbour County and was reared near the Edwin Community in Henry County, son of the late Perry Lee Baxley and Mary Odis Hartzog Baxley. He was a 1951 graduate of Abbeville High School. Mr. Baxley lived in Shorterville before moving to the Bertha Community in 1972. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church where he served on the cemetery committee and sang in the church choir. Mr. Baxley was also a member of the Brown’s Crossroads Masonic Lodge No. 529. Mr. Baxley retired from WestPoint Stevens in the billing department after thirty years employment. In earlier years, he was employed at the Walter F. George Lock & Dam and was engaged in farming. Mr. Baxley is preceded in death by his wife, Euna Mills Baxley, a son, Charles Stephen Baxley, and a brother, James Edward Baxley.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Bennie Paul Baxley, Sacramento, CA, and Roger Barefield (Jean), Bertha Community; a very special friend, Carolyn Jones, Eufaula; three sisters, Juliette Stokes, Edwin Community, Vanarah Carroll, Dothan, and Edith Raines (Rev. Bernie), Brewton, AL; five grandchildren, Stephanie McKnight (Kevin), Lori Cooper (Dan), Bennie Paul Baxley, II, Tara Jeno, Shannon Evans (Mitch); nine great-grandchildren, Jamison Wilson, Madie Cooper, Autumn Baxley, Taylor Jeno, Emma Baxley, Chloe Cooper, Stephen Kye Cooper, Lauren McKnight and Jonathon Whitehead.
