COLUMBIA, ALABAMA . . . Charles Whitman (Whit) Owens, a resident of Columbia, died early Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013, in the Birmingham VA Medical Center. He was 87.


            Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, April 25, 2013, in the Columbia United Methodist Church with Dr. Walter Reeder officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Columbia City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 P.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Friends of Columbia,” P.O, Box 77, Columbia, AL 36319 or to the Henry County Veterans’ Memorial Park, c/o Elaine Kennedy, P.O. Box 115, Shorterville, AL 36373.


            Mr. Owens was born and reared in Abbeville, son of the late Hasting Vann Owens and Verna Nordan Owens. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Campaign Ribbon with a bronze star, the American Area Campaign Ribbon and was attached as a Navy Corpsman to the Marines. Mr. Owens was a graduate of Starks Military Institute in Montgomery and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University). He was retired as a bookkeeper from Consolidated Produce Company in Dothan. Mr. Owens was a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church and the Brown’s Crossroads Masonic Lodge where he received a fifty-year membership pin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Buie Owens.


            Surviving relatives include a son, Vann Scott Owens and wife, Laneyl Owens, Indian Springs, AL; two grandchildren, Bobby Cornelius and Claire Owens; a sister, Peggy Sykes and husband, Ray Sykes, Birmingham.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Bobby Cornelius, Hasting Sykes, Mike Culbreth, Jimmy Vann, Art Solomon, and Larry Bond.
