Mr. Charles Wilton “Coach” Nelson of Dothan, loving son, husband, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle went home to be with our Savior on August 19, 2015 with his loving wife by his side. He was 81.
Coach Nelson was a faithful long time member of 45 years at Southside Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher of the Men’s Bible Class and he served as a deacon. Coach Nelson graduated from Brantley High School. He also attended Troy State University and University of Florida receiving his degree in Education. In 1962 his coaching career began at Hartford and he coached until his retirement from Cottonwood in 1988. During his career he coached at several schools in the Wiregrass. The highlights of his career were being a part of two State Championship Football teams, 1962 in Hartford and 1986 in Cottonwood. He was humbled by every honor, but his legacy was the way he lived his life and the lives he touched.
Coach Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, BB and Cora Chesteen and Clerman and Ester Nelson; two brothers, J. D. Chesteen of Hartford and Frances Nelson of Dothan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Taylor Nelson; three brothers, Doug, “Bo”, and Thomas Nelson; step-mother, McGartha Nelson of Dothan; a sister-in-law, Jennifer (Ken) Napier of Dothan; a brother-in-law, Wayne (Gail) Taylor of Dothan; a special aunt, Louise Moon of Dothan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, August 21, 2015 from Southside Baptist Church with Reverend Stacy Stafford and Reverend Ken Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until 11 AM, Friday, August 21, 2015 one hour prior to the service.
Active pallbearers will be Donnie Chesteen, Doug Nelson, Tom Nelson, Kenny Napier, Scooter McCain, Jim McCain, Jerry Moseley, and James Carlisle.
Honorary pallbearers will be former football players, coaches, and deacons of Southside Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Southside Baptist Church, Wesley Manor, or Gentiva Hospice of Dothan.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice of Dothan and Wesley Manor for their compassion and care.
