Christopher Todd Smith, 47, of Columbia, Alabama, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on May 24, 2014.
Todd was preceded in death by his father and mother, Dan and Vickey Smith; brother, Tim Smith; grandfather, J.O. Smith; and grandparents, Virgil and Edith Newton.
He is survived by his wife, Lori Hoskins Smith; daughters, Victoria Grace Smith and Clarissa Hope Smith; sons, Elliot Alexander Smith and Harrison Rush Smith; brother, Troy Smith (Barbara); grandmother, Ruth Hinson Smith; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Todd was born to Dan and Vickey Smith January 6, 1967, and spent his early years in Enterprise , Alabama, until his family moved to Dothan, Alabama. He graduated from Northview High School in 1985 and Auburn University at Montgomery in 1991. He married his high school sweetheart, Lori Hoskins Smith, September 7, 1991, and they resided in Montgomery, Alabama.
In 1993, they moved back to Dothan for Todd to join the family business, Dothan Motor Company, which his grandfather started in 1946. With a great sense of family heritage, he eventually took the helm of the business from his father and uncle and grew it from nine to more than forty employees. Todd’s life mission was to add significance to the lives of all people he came in contact with – family, friends, business associates, and strangers. He viewed his work as one opportunity for carrying out this mission. He also saw it as his greatest tool for spreading the love of Jesus Christ to the world around him. He wanted DMC to succeed so that he could, through financial support, add significance to the lives at the Ethiopian orphanage that captured his heart in 2012, as well as other organizations that spread God’s love.
Any description of Todd would be incomplete if it did not include that he was a man of integrity who loved the Lord with all of his heart. His heart’s greatest desire was to be “a man after God’s own heart,” and to hear God say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” He spent the early morning hours of every day in prayer and Bible reading. Written on his mirror is his description of a perfect day: “to look for opportunities to encourage people and point them to Jesus, connect with the kids, and be in communion with God all day long.” Any description would also be lacking if it did not include that he felt his greatest accomplishment in life was his children. He was a father who loved, protected, and encouraged his children; gave them a vision for their futures; and most importantly, shared his faith with them. Todd was also a faithful husband for 22 years and cherished his wife and loved her well. He was a very active member of Watermark Church in Ashford, Alabama.
A celebration of Todd's life will be 4 pm Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Watermark Church in Ashford with Rev. Todd Thorpe officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm prior to the service at the church.
