Colonel Robert L. Floyd III (79) of Newton, AL passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021.


The eldest son of Robert L. Floyd, Jr. and Louise (Olive) Floyd, Bob was born on February 11, 1942 in Columbus, GA and was raised in Union, SC.


Bob served 32 years in the Army as a Special Forces Officer and Army Aviator.  His service included two combat tours in Vietnam, Operation Just Cause and Desert Storm. During his first tour in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and Master Jump Wings with Bronze Star device.  He was also awarded the Bronze Star, the Bronze Star with Valor, and the Purple Heart. During his second tour in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division he was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross.


After retiring from the Army, Bob worked for Sikorsky Helicopter as Vice President of Operations in the Middle East and in the United States, and as a Project Manager for Blackwater Security in the Middle East. In his leisure hours and throughout retirement, Bob enjoyed travelling the world, snow skiing in Europe, sailing and boating in the Caribbean and Central Europe and on Lake Eufaula, scuba diving worldwide, riding his Harley, and sitting on the porch and counting the cows on his farm with his faithful dog, Dixie Lee, by his side. He loved the Lord, his family and his country.  Bob led by example and was the epitome of integrity, generosity, compassion, courage and humility.  He was greatly respected by all who knew him and was a mentor and friend to many. Bob was a true patriot who loved and defended his country.  He treasured freedom and knew its cost only too well.


Bob is survived by his wife Christine; one son, LTC Bob Floyd, USAF (Ret.); two daughters, Lynda Fouquette (Kevin) and Angela Hynds (Jeff); one grandson, Gentry Hynds; two granddaughters, Brittany Fouquette and Dovie Hynds; one brother, Steve Floyd; three sisters, Caroline Buxton, Olivia Smith and Mary Furse; and many devoted cousins, nieces and nephews.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL, 32256, The Salvation Army, P O Box 1346, Dothan, AL 36302 or your local animal shelter.


A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm, on Friday, May 7, 2021 at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Dothan, AL with Reverend Randy Sellers officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
