Cully was born May 10, 1929 to Sam & Evie (Brooks) Jones in Holmes County, Florida near Black, Alabama. He was the 4th oldest of 11 children. Growing up on a farm, he spent many days doing chores and working in the fields. He picked a lot of cotton, out-picking his brothers and sisters by 100 pounds a day. Following in his brothers’ footsteps, Cully, also called “Click,” left home in his late teens to join the military.
On a bus ride back to Ft. Benning, GA, Cully met and became thoroughly smitten with Miss Lillie Kate Watson when she allowed him to sit next to her during the ride. Five months later they were married.
Cully proudly served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1952. He was stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia and later at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. During that time he served in "G" Co, 325 AIR, a regiment of the 82nd Airborne. At the end of his enlistment, Cully had 27 "jumps" listed in his Paratrooper Jump Book. Cully was in one of the last groups of soldiers to be glider-qualified. He also served in the National Guard in Dothan from 1953 to 1954 in the 131st Ordinance Company as a carpenter.
Following military service, Cully worked for Royal Crown Bottling Company as a truck driver. He later went to work with L.J. Sullivan as a carpenter, staying with him for twenty-one years. Some of the most prestigious houses in Dothan were built by this company. Afterwards, Cully spent six years as a self-employed carpenter. He then was employed by Earl and Mack Dove at AAA Cooper Transportation as their personal woodworker.
He tried to retire in 1991, but due to his professional reputation for being a master carpenter, he was still heavily sought after for part-time work by old and new friends. Cully was considered one of the best and most well-known woodworkers in Dothan.
Cully loved watching Atlanta Braves baseball and listening to bluegrass music. “No doubt,” you never left on a trip without being told to “be particular.” A loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Jones was predeceased by his parents Sam & Evie Jones; daughter Laura K. Knowles; grandson Sam Crowell Jones; five brothers, Prennis, Bobby C, Orban E “Runt,” Robert Fulton, and Jake Jones; two sisters, Jackie Jones and Lucy Register.
Cully is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillie Kate (nee Watson) Jones; son Danny H. Jones (Kelly), Ashford, AL; grandchildren Carie Peeples (Matt), Odenville, AL, Joshua Jones (Stacey Tarnowski-Jones), Salem, AL, and Jack Jones, Ashford, AL; great grandchildren Rowan and Hayden Dunn, Gavin, Grayson and Reid Peeples, Alex Tarnowski, and Laura L. Tarnowski-Jones; brother Mikey Jones (Frances), Oscilla, GA; sisters Nadine Ashbaugh, LaGrange, GA and Willo Jean McNeal, Black, AL; and two sisters-in-law. He is also survived by his wife’s family members, several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, family friends and former co-workers.
Pallbearers will be: Joshua Jones, Jack Jones, Alex Tarnowski, Ed Knowles, Eddie Register, Scott Lewis, Brandon Plummer, Greg Woodham, Koby Smith.
