CANTON, GEORGIA. . .Dan Mitchell Searcy, a resident of Canton, Georgia, died Thursday morning, September 22, 2016, in an Atlanta hospital after an extended illness. He was 72.
Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM (C.D.T.) Saturday, September 24, 2016, in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Randy Greene officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:30 PM until 3:45 PM (C.D.T.) Saturday at the mortuary.
Dan possessed a great fondness for family time and the great outdoors. For this reason and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Sunshine (an outdoor retreat for children suffering from cancer and their families), 1850 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30033.
Mr. Searcy was born July 29, 1944, son of the late Wade Watson Searcy and Mavie Skipper Searcy. He was raised in Abbeville and a 1962 graduate of Abbeville High School. He graduated from Auburn University in 1968 with a B.S. Degree in Wildlife Science. While at Auburn, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He retired from the Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Interior, after thirty years of service. During his career, he worked in Alabama, Maryland, Illinois, Washington, DC, Louisiana, and Georgia. He had a passion for all varieties of wildlife. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Robert Wade (Bobby) Searcy and his sister, Mildred (Sister) Searcy Dyer.
Surviving relatives include his loving wife of 50 years, Linda Nelson Searcy; four children, Shea White (Jim), Atlanta; Mandy Rusch (Greg), Woodstock, GA; Jennifer Roeder (Scott), Woodstock, GA; and Blake Searcy (Jamie), Canton, GA; eight grandchildren, Lauren Rusch, Jeremy Rusch, Josh Rusch, Christopher Roeder, Lindsey Roeder, Daniel Roeder, Britney Searcy, and Megan Searcy; sister-in-law, Annie Fletcher Leslie (Bill); nieces, Jane Dyer Brown, Laura Searcy, Lisa Maurides, and Laura Mazzola; nephew, Jeffery Wood (Sherry), cousin, Don Skipper (Marilyn); and countless friends.
