David was born and reared in the Union Community of Henry County, son of the late Clarence Savelle Herndon and Willie Vann Herring Herndon. He was a 1965 graduate of Abbeville High School and a 1969 graduate of Auburn University where he received a degree in Business Administration. David served his country in the Army National Guard in the Abbeville unit. He was an active member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church. David was the Chief Executive Officer of Herndon Oil Company of Abbeville.
Those who knew David, know the deep goodness and generosity of his heart. His love for his family, especially his wife, children and grandchildren, was the driving force in his life. He was a man of great strength, compassion and kindness.
From the time he was a boy growing into a man, he grew in humility and gratitude. He never sought attention for himself and was always ready to praise others. His giving of time, energy and resources was to the needy and less fortunate throughout his community, surrounding areas and beyond.
David fought a valiant battle with the realities of life. In all of these struggles, he never lost sight of those he deeply loved. We commend his soul to God, who loves and cares for him, and us all, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
David was a lover, not a hater; a giver, not a taker; a receiver, not a rejecter. He is, and always will be loved.
Surviving relatives include his loving wife of forty-eight years, Maribeth Ward Herndon; two daughters, Fran Herndon Maddox (Jeff), Nashville, TN; and Rachael Herndon-Prine (Matt), Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Bega Herndon-Prine, Welby Herndon-Prine, Calhoun Maddox and Vann Maddox; and a sister, Patty Herndon, Birmingham.
