David J. Allen (Brigadier General, U.S. Army), Retired, of Ozark, Alabama passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the age of 82.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Earl Bankston Memorial Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark, AL on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11:00am with Dr. Billy Gaither officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. An interment service will also be held at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, ME at a date to be determined.
Allen was born in Brewer, Maine on October 10, 1935. He graduated from Brewer High School In 1954. He graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, in 1958, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Government and was then commissioned through the ROTC program as a second lieutenant. He also held a Master of Arts degree in Management from Central Michigan University.
His military education includes completion of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Airborne, Ranger, Helicopter and Fixed Wing Aviation courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the National War College.
He served two tours in the Republic of Vietnam during the 1960’s and attended the Command and General Staff College in 1970. After graduating, he was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, to the 1st Cavalry Division in subsequent positions from 1970-1974 as the Division Assistant G3, the G5, Commander of the 5th Cavalry Battalion, and as Division Inspector General.
In 1974, BG Allen served at HQDA/Deputy chief of Staff of Operations in the Aviation Office, Washington, D.C. for two years. In 1977, he graduated from the National War College and served as the G3 of the 2nd Infantry Division, in Korea. He returned to Washington, D.C. in 1978 and served in the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)/J5 as a Strategic Policy Planner on the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) II Delegation in Geneva, Switzerland.
He commanded the 1st Aviation Brigade at Fort Rucker, Alabama from May 1980 through June 1983. He served as Chief of Combat Development and Force Modernization, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (DCSOPS), HQ, Forces Command at Fort McPherson, Georgia until October 1984.
He served in Korea as the Executive Officer to the Chief, United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/United States Forces Korea/Eighth United States Army, Korea from November 1984 until May 1986. On May 22, 1986 he was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned as the Assistant Division Commander (Support), 2nd Infantry Division until July 1987. He then became the Assistant Division Commander (Maneuver), 2nd Infantry division, Republic of Korea.
In July 1988, BG Allen became the Chief of Staff/Deputy Commanding General, Installation Activities, Headquarters, First U.S. army and Fort George G. Meade at Fort Meade, Maryland.
BG Allen’s decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Star Medals, Department of Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, Joint Service Medal, Air Medal (with numeral 51), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (7 Stars), Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Korean Meritorious Service Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross (with Palm), Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Department of Army Staff Identification Badge and Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Jump Wings, and Republic of Korea Master Army Aviator Wings. He was a Master Army Aviator with over 5,100 flight hours, 1,500 of which were in combat.
Upon retirement from the United States Army in 1991, Allen relocated to Ozark, Alabama and worked as a consultant with Serv-Air, Dyncorp and SCCS Inc.
While living in Alabama until his death, Allen was involved with the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation, the Friends of Wiregrass, the Army Aviation Museum Foundation, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ozark Rotary Club, the National Rifle Association and Camp AlaFlo with the Boy Scouts of America.
David J. Allen is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marion Allen. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Allen of Ozark, AL, two daughters, Tammy Allen of Milford, ME, Carrie Dale of Midlothian, VA one grandson, Alexander J. Dale of Midlothian, VA, a brother, Dr. Arthur Allen and his wife, Bonnie Allen of Brewer, ME, and nephews and a niece.
