David Lewis Stokes, Sr., 88, a resident of Dothan, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Memorial services will be held at a later date and time to be announced.
Mr. Stokes was born December 10, 1934 in Columbia, South Carolina to John Patrick and Louise Browder Stokes and lived the early years of his life there. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956 during the Korean War. He later attended college at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, NY. He began working with G.E. in 1963 and during his career he helped NASA put man on the moon with the Apollo 11 project. He continued working with G.E. in management as he moved to Nashville, TN. While there, he met and married the love of his life, Sandra Ann Shelton. In 1974, they relocated to Dothan. He begin his career with Sony Manufacturing in 1976, retiring as vice-president in 1996 after 20 years of service.
Mr. Stokes was an avid golfer with “the church group”. He was a member of the Dothan Country Club where he served on the board, the Kiwanis Club, the V.F.W. Post and the Elks Club. He was also a member of Covenant United Methodist Church for over 35 years where he served in numerous capacities. Mr. Stokes will be remembered as a kind, loving, humble and honest man. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.
He is predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Dorothy Holstein, Earline Derderian and Pat Bartholemew and two brothers, John Stokes and Herman Stokes.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra A. Stokes of Dothan; a daughter, Deborah Lynn Stokes McIlvaine (Robert) of Hinsdale, IL; a son, David Lewis Stokes, Jr. (Lorri) of Dothan; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Jones, Mackenzie McIlvaine, Graham McIlvaine, Andie Lee Stokes, Keely Anne Stokes, Abigail Stokes, Brody Stokes, Skylar Rayne Stokes, Bayley Blackmon, Sydney Koumell and Brook Thames; great grandchildren, Pippa Jones, Aimsley McIlvaine and Ana Thames; two sisters, Mary Rabon (Jim) of Irmo, SC and Sylvia Dauksch (Paul) of Orlando, FL; a sister-in-law, Diane Stokes of Orlando, FL; special friends, Celia and Jim McKee of Stevenson, AL; several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dothan Animal Shelter.
