ABBEVILLE, ALABAMA. . .David Merritt Ham, of Abbeville, Alabama, and a former resident of Sevierville, Tennessee, died late Saturday night, May 13, 2023, in the Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama. He was 87.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, May 22, 2023, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Ricky Sowell and Darden Kirby officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:00 P.M. Monday in the family life center of the church. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the College of Engineering at the University of Alabama, 245 7th Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
David Ham was born and reared in Henry County, Alabama, near Abbeville, son of the late David Retus “D.R.” Ham and Gladys Merritt Ham. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School and received a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama. He lived most of his adult lifetime in Sevierville, Tennessee where he retired as a Highway Engineer from the Federal Highway Administration. After retirement, he was employed by the Blalock Companies of Sevierville. David served as Project Engineer of Highway 441 North from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge which included the tunnel project. He was also the Chief Project Engineer of the Cumberland Gap Project at the Tennessee-Kentucky border. David was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville and was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Sevierville and the Oakey Grove Baptist Church. He was a lifelong Alabama Crimson Tide fan. David was preceded in death by a son, Allen R. Ham.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Phyllis Headrick Ham, Sevierville, TN; a son, Jim David Ham (Virginia), Headland, AL; a daughter, Julie Hurst (Kevin), Sevierville, TN; grandchildren, Samuel Riley (Rachel), Tiffany Ham, Haley McGlathery (Zack), Ella Hurst and Sam Hurst (Katie); great-grandchildren, Christopher Riley, Carver Riley, John McGlathery, Samuel McGlathery, Abel Hurst, Sawyer Hurst, Toby Hurst and Luka Hurst; mother of his children and special friend, Bettye Chambers Ham, Sevierville, TN.
