A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2022 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. All are welcome to share memories, tell stories and “shoot the breeze,” just the way David would have wanted it.
David was born to Robert (Bob) and Elizabeth (Betty) Omer on February 21, 1942 in Quincy, Illinois. David’s father passed away a few years later in a plane crash while training pilots for World War II. In 1946, Betty married Douglas C. Filkins, who adopted both David and his older sister, Marcia. The family then moved to Hamilton, Illinois where David graduated from Hamilton High School. Following high school, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, often sending colorful letters back home to his family in Illinois. After his time in the Navy, David enrolled at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where he received his bachelor’s degree in communications.
David began a successful 15-year career in ad sales at several television stations in Minnesota. He then transitioned to become a real estate agent in the suburbs of Minneapolis, before moving to Dothan in 1999. In Dothan, David and his wife, Jeanne, owned and operated a hot dog stand at Lowe’s, where he truly loved “shooting the breeze” with his many friends and customers. He was a member of the Wiregrass Antique and Collectors Car Club, spending many hours tinkering on cars and any other machines he could get his hands on lawn mowers, motorcycles, RVs and more!
David was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Douglas F. (Danny) Filkins; his brother, Paul Dieterle; his sister, Marcia Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Filkins; his daughter, Heather (Paul Weinschreider) Filkins of Elgin, IL; his daughter, Brooke (Timothy) Houghton of Chicago, IL; his son, Matthew Filkins of Denver, CO; his daughter, Joelle (Lee) Hansen of Elgin, MN; his stepdaughter, Charmaine Watkins of Dothan, AL; his stepson, Anthony Sturm of Houston, TX; his stepson, Nick Sturm; his brother, John (Jan) Filkins of Keokuk, IA; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
