Dawn Marvel Gwin, a resident of Dothan, Alabama passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017. He was 74. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home. Interment services with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 2 pm in Appleton City Cemetery in Appleton City, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607. Mr. Gwin was born on August 29, 1942 in Appleton City, Missouri and spent the early part of his life there. He was a 1960 graduate of Appleton City High School and joined the Air Force on January 3, 1961 where he was stationed in Germany. Following his military career, he worked with the Birmingham Police Department as a patrolman then with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department as a helicopter pilot. In 1978, he moved to the Wiregrass area and was employed at Fort Rucker as an instructor pilot until his retirement in 1996. Mr. Gwin then moved to Mobile where he was employed as a manager and salesman with Superior Metal Products. He moved back to Dothan in 2005 where he was employed with Liberty National as a recruiter until his subsequent retirement. He was a member of the Shriner's and the Palestine Missionary Baptist Church in Mobile. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Alabama Football fan. Mr. Gwin was preceded in death by his parents, Dawn Forest and Virginia Faye Gwin; a brother, Ben Burk; a sister, Patty Burk; and a son Steven Gwin. Survivors include his wife, Jo Gwin; his children, Scott (Silvia) Gwin and Leslie (Chris) Payne; step-children, Julie Page (Barry Higgins) and Gary Schlie; grandchildren, Sean Gwin, Trevor Gwin, Taylor Gwin, Noah Gwin, Cameron Payne, Colton Payne, Ashton Payne, Dalton Schlie and Amanda Page; and great grandchild, Skylar Gwin; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
