HEADLAND. . .D. C. Champion, a resident of Headland, died early Friday morning, February 20, 2015, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. He was 93.


            Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 23, 2015, in the New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, Alabama, with Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:30 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Headland.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland United Methodist “Building Fund”, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mr. Champion was born in Clarke County, Alabama, near Thomasville, and was reared in Dallas County, near Selma, son of the late Dacey Lee Champion and Connie Windham Champion. He lived most of his adult lifetime in Selma before moving to Headland in 1985. Mr. Champion served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was formerly employed as an insurance agent and staff manager with Life & Casualty Insurance Company of Tennessee and retired after forty years employment. Mr. Champion was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church and was a former member of the First Christian Church and the American Legion, both in Selma. Mr. Champion was an avid gardener and received numerous awards for “Yard of the Month” at his home for growing daylilies. He was also involved as a volunteer in landscaping at the Headland United Methodist Church and the Headland High School.


            Mr. Champion was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Warren Champion, a grandson, John Spencer Champion, two brothers, Albert Champion and Hubert Champion.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Clara Barnes Champion; a daughter, Sandra Champion Williams (Steve), Headland; a son, Roger Champion (Donna), Monticello, FL; a sister, Helen Myers, Pensacola, FL; three grandchildren, Hunter Champion (Laurie), Kimberly Read (Rick), and Amanda Wise (Sam); seven great-grandchildren.
