Dean Harris Shields of Hartford passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019. She was 73 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2019 at Maple Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Teddy Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
The family request that flowers be omitted, and memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Shields memory to the Christa Screws Family Fund, Commercial Bank of Ozark, P.O. Box 1029, Ozark, AL 36361.
Dean began her working career at the Chenille Mill and Shirt Factory in Geneva. After her time there, she began working at the Geneva County Courthouse. Her first position at the courthouse was in the Geneva County Probate Office. From there she transitioned into a position in the Sheriff’s Office. It was after her work in the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office that she decided to run for the office of Revenue Commissioner. She was elected as Geneva County Revenue Commissioner for three consecutive terms, and she served her constituents notably for two and a half of those terms. She retired from the Geneva County Revenue Office in May of 2016. During Mrs. Dean’s tenure there, she never met a stranger. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. Her witty personality, along with her love of people, will forever be missed.
Dean was born in Holmes County, Florida to the late Huey Edward and Eva Mae Cooper Harris.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Alan Williams; one granddaughter, Rachel Fondren; and one brother Charles Harris.
She is survived by her husband, William Randy Shields of Hartford; five children, Amy Brackin (Ricky) of Geneva, Charlie Harris (Jenni) of Geneva, Janie Fondren (Paul) of Hartford, Jay Shields (Rylla) of Hartford, and Jeff Shields (Amy) of Sharpsburg, GA; 13 grandchildren, Matthew Alan Williams (Ashlee), Carson Brackin, Emma Brackin, Sarah Jane Fondren, Patrick Fondren (Shelby), Georgia Justice (Cory), Layla Newman (Casey), Tuesday Shields, Mason Shields, Lexi Shields, Noah Harris, Addison Harris, and Elli Harris; four great-grandchildren, London and Christian Williams, Rhett Fondren, and Delta Justice; one brother, Melvin Harris (Margaret) of Caryville, FL; two nephews, Greg Harris (Robin), and Gary Harris (Chrissy); two great nephews, Ethan and Logan Harris.
