Dolores Jo “Joey” Burton, a resident of Dothan, AL passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at her residence. She was 86 years old.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 10:00 am in Sunset Memorial Park Pavilion with Rev. Dr. Joe Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 - 10:00 am in the funeral home on the day of the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Evergreen Presbyterian Church or the Wiregrass Humane Society.
Joey was born on March 21, 1936 in Selma, AL and lived there the early years of her life. She held the title of Little Miss Selma. Joey graduated from A.G. Parrish High School in 1953. She graduated from Auburn University with a degree in education and later earned her Master’s Degree and AA. Joey was a lifelong educator and Psychometrist who had compassion for teaching and counseling from elementary age to college students. She retired with the state of Alabama with 35 years in education and later worked with the state of Florida for 10 years as a counselor. Joey enjoyed spending time with family, an avid reader and pet lover. She was a member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Frances West; and husband of 53 years, Jack Raymond Burton.
Survivors include her daughters, Marna Burton (Bud) Bellande of Birmingham and Ginger Burton (Craig) Scarbrough of Midland City; grandchildren, Burt Bellande, Will Bellande and Merrill Scarbrough; nieces and nephews, Richard (Rose) Hanna, Don (Lisa) Hanna and Susan (Mitch) Hall; and her caregivers, Sharon, Gloria, Sharon and Jackie.
