Donald C. Norby


 


Donald C. Norby, a resident of Dothan, died Monday, October 8, 2013 at his residence. He was 85.


 


Memorial Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2013 at First United Methodist Church Chapel with Rev. Lynn S. Nesbitt officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing. At other times the family will be at the residence, 3004 Evans Drive. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to First United Methodist Church Senior Center.


 


Mr. Norby was born July 31, 1928 in Wisconsin and lived the early years of his life there. After graduation, he entered the U. S. Marines. He then married Joanne Kohmen and they had 3 children. They resided in Florida for several years before moving to Dothan in 1964. Mr. Norby established Save-A-Minute Foods in Dothan, a small chain of convenience stores throughout Dothan. He then pursued interest as a commercial real estate broker with Stancil King Realty. He also sponsored several youth programs in the Dothan area. Mr. Norby was a past member of  of the Optimist Club, Elks Club, VFW Club and Dothan Country Club. He was an avid golfer and a member of First United Methodist Church of Dothan.


 


Survivors include his wife of 64 years,  Joanne E. Norby of Dothan; three children, Mary J. Baltikauski (James) of Hartford, Dr. Donald T. Norby of Anniston (Nancy) and Barbara Norby Bauer (William) of Albertville; five grandchildren, William Norby Bauer (Jennifer), Cynthia Lynn Darby (Thomas), Anna Marie Swenson (Kyle), Paige B. Norby and Allison T. Norby; two great-grandchildren, Alexandra Norby Bauer and Aubrey Michelle Bauer; a sister, Cleo Serum of Duran, WI; several nieces and nephews also survive.
