Donald Eugene Schmidt, 82, of Dothan passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013 at a local hospital following a long battle with cancer.


A mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 am Monday, May 6, 2013 at St. Columba Catholic Church with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. Committal services will follow at Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. There will be a prayer service at 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home with a visitation to follow.


Mr. Schmidt was born October 6, 1930 in Cincinnati, OH and lived there until moving to New Jersey in 1963. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in Germany. He graduated from St. Xavier High School and received a Chemistry Degree from Xavier University in 1952. He was married to Betty Late Garrett Schmidt on November 28, 1959. Mr. Schmidt was employed with Inmont Corporation and later with the Lilly Industrial Corporation as a chemist for 45 years until his retirement. He moved to Dothan in 1985 from Thomasville, GA. He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, and the Elder Council Knights of Columbus in Cincinnati, OH.


Survivors include his wife Betty Schmidt; his daughters, Donna Schmidt Wright and her husband Kenneth, and Martha Schmidt Gilpin and her husband Sean; his grandchildren, Mason Wright, Victoria Wright, Ryan Wright, and Connor Gilpin.
