Mr. Donald Ray Alford of Hacoda, AL passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2018. He was 82.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2018 in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva with Rev. Sam Totten and Rev. Robert Risner officiating. Burial will follow in Travelers Rest Cemetery in Samson with full military honors at graveside, and Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m.
Mr. Alford was born March 8, 1936 in Opp, AL to the late Ruben Ray and Dollie Fay Odom Alford. He retired after 22 years of service from the United States Coast Guard. As senior chief of search and rescue, he received numerous commendations and medals for saving many lives, as well as, instructing others in life-saving techniques. He was a dedicated volunteer of the American Red Cross for several years. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the bounty of his harvest with his community. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather…a man of great strength, integrity and honor who believed in helping those around him. He was a faithful member of the Corner Creek Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Patricia J. Alford of Hacoda, Al; one son, Darrell Alford (Lori) of Mobile, Al; two daughters, Cheryl White (Donny) and Robin Wise all of Samson, AL and one sister, Faye St. Germain of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren .
