Doris C. Whitehurst, 89, a resident of Cowarts, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Southeast Health.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Cowarts Baptist Church with Reverend Jonathan Sorensen and Reverend Chris Dunnam officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. on Saturday prior to service time.

Doris was born July 23, 1933 in Jakin, Georgia to Clifton and Agnes Cannon. She graduated from Jakin High School and then attended Riley Business College in Dothan. At Riley, she met her one true love, E. D. Whitehurst. E. D. and Doris were married on July 24, 1951 and added to their family two daughters, JoAnne and Pam.
Doris was employed over the years as a bookkeeper for various businesses, mainly focused in the building materials industry. She retired from bookkeeping after working for many years at Ansley’s Building Materials, now known as Southern Lumber Supply.
Doris loved her family and her Lord fiercely. She was an excellent example of a Godly wife, mother and friend. She was a member of Cowarts Baptist Church for over 70 years, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, church council member and treasurer. She was also a member of the Cowarts Town Council for over 25 years.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, E. D. Whitehurst, a daughter, JoAnne Shelley, a grandson, Lee Alan Driggars and a brother, Dr. Clifton Cannon, Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Pam (Myer) Holloway of Cowarts; son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Ronnie (Linda) Shelley of Ariton; granddaughter, Emily Holloway of Pelham and grandson, Matthew (Kathy) Shelley of Montgomery; a brother, James L. (Suzanne) Cannon of Gainesville, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Jane Cannon of Savannah, Georgia and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cowarts Town Council.
