Dorothy Ann “Dottie” Tuggle Jones, a longtime resident of Dothan, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2023 at Extendicare Health Care. She was 95.
Mrs. Jones was born March 15, 1928 in Gorgas, Alabama to Carlos Eugene and Minerva Jane Key Tuggle. She later moved to Cordova and graduated from Cordova High School in 1944 at the age of 16. Following graduation, she attended Hillman Nursing School (now UAB) where she received her RN degree.
In 1954, she moved to Dothan where she made her family home at 305 Montezuma Avenue for 53 years. She was a supportive wife to her husband, Dr. James M. Jones, Jr. who was an OBGYN Physician for 25 years and later served as director of the E.R. at Flowers Hospital for 20 years. She was also a proud devoted mother of her three children, Dr. James M. Jones III who is a cardiologist, Dr. Thomas Keith Jones who is a cardiac surgeon and Tessa Jones Hollenbeck who is an OBGYN nurse, all successfully following in their parents’ footsteps.
She was passionate about her yard, loved flowers and gardening and was a member of the Dothan Garden Club. She also loved her Bridge Club and her devoted friends she shared that with. Mrs. Jones was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Dr. James Matthew Jones, Jr., two brothers, Carlos Tuggle, Jr. and Charles Lee Tuggle and a sister, Sarah Louise Tuggle.
She is survived by three children, Dr. James M. Jones III (Susan) of Trussville, Dr. Thomas Keith Jones (Carole) of West Monroe, LA and Tessa Lila Jones Hollenbeck (Joe) of Decatur; ten grandchildren, Michael Jones (Kerri), Matthew Jones (Anya), Marshall Jones (Lori), Adam Jones (Erin), Abby Savage (Chad), Caitlin FitzSimons (Brendan), Creighton Jones (Evette), Lila Powell, Cara Crenshaw (Brandon) and Dana Goodloe (Matt); eleven great-grandchildren, Allyson, Beckett, Emerson, Zoe, Cian, Kenna Grace, Hadley, Parker, Easton, Lila James and Annie Harmon; a sister, Jean Tuggle Sampieri of Cordova; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Afrey Wright and the staff of Extendicare and Gentiva Hospice for the compassionate care given to Mrs. Jones.
Private services will be held for the family.
