Dorothy Boyd McCraney, affectionately known as Dot, age 93, loving daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother of Mountain Brook, Alabama passed away peacefully in Gardendale, Alabama August 22, 2024.

Dot was born January 28, 1931, in Clayton Alabama to the late Alto Nathan Boyd and Mamie Bell Smith Boyd. She was a graduate of Clayton High School and received her Master of Arts in Education and Education Specialist Degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She was a retired kindergarten teacher from the Jefferson County Board of Education with over 20 years of devoted service to the children whom she taught and loved. She spent most of her career at Warrior, Trussville, and Centerpoint Elementary Schools. Her passion and relationships with her students led to her being sought to tutor several of her prior students as they aged into higher grades and became personal friends with their parents. She was a long-standing member of Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church and served in numerous positions there during her life. Many of her close lifelong friends were from her church family. During her long life she enjoyed cooking, sewing and socializing, but her greatest passion other than her family was her love of her yards and whatever beauty she could sculpt them into. She loved all the things she could make grow. She worked relentlessly and tirelessly as long as she was physically able to maintain the beauty she had created. Dot was strong-willed, determined and committed in all aspects of her life. Everything she took part in was done for the love and care of her family, friends and all people. She liked to relax in a rocking chair or a porch swing. She had a rocking chair in nearly every room of her home and a folding rocker which she would not travel without. She loved to rock and sip cream sherry while eating chocolate covered cherries. She was well known for her pecan pies which were typically requested to be brought to family and social events.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold Britt McCraney, daughter, Leah McCraney and sisters, Beatrice Cooper and Bert Andrews.

Her memory will be cherished and endured by her loving sons, Nathan McCraney of Flemington New Jersey, Randall McCraney of Deer Park Alabama; grandchildren, great grandchildren, many special nephews and nieces and her loving and dedicated caregiver Carolyn Wheatley.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Glover Funeral Home, 72 South Midway Street, Clayton Alabama with Pastor Madison Roberts officiating and Glover Funeral Home of Clayton directing.
