 Dorsey Lanier Haynes


 Dorsey Lanier (DL) Haynes, 91, of Dothan, Alabama passed away October 4th, 2014, in Birmingham.


He was a native of Wedowee, the youngest of eleven children growing up near Piney Woods Creek in Randolph County Alabama.  Upon graduation from Randolph County High School, he enlisted in the Navy and was serving aboard LST-51 on D-Day, just offshore of the beaches of Normandy.  He also saw action in the Mediterranean in support of the Allied invasion of Italy before being transferred to the Pacific Fleet, where he served as an officer aboard the USS Lamar.  After the war, Lanier attended Jacksonville State University before transferring to Auburn University, where he completed a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education. 


He has served education as a teacher, Superintendent of the Randolph County School System, Director of the Opelika Vocational School, Dean of the Technical Division of the George C. Wallace State Community College, and Assistant State Superintendent of Education for the State of Alabama.  In addition, Lanier was a member of the Education Commission of the United States, the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, and the Committee on Communication for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  During his distinguished career in education, he is credited with creating the statewide network of technical schools and community colleges throughout Alabama, and with achieving the largest ever legislative funding for education in the state of Alabama.


Lanier Haynes was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Phi Kappa Educational fraternities; past president of American Legion Post 53; a member of the VFW; past president of the Roanoke, Opelika and Wiregrass Lions Club; and a past member of the Dothan Planning and Zoning Board. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Dothan.


After retiring as Dean of the Technical Division of the George C. Wallace State Community College, Lanier moved to Webb, Alabama, where he continued his passion for agriculture and forestry. 


He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Fairy Murphy Haynes; son, Phillip Murphy (Sandy) Haynes of Webb, Alabama; daughter, Rosemary Haynes (Chip) Faust of Homewood, Alabama; grandchildren, Phillip Lanier Haynes, Kristen Haynes (Brett) Vaughn, Alexandra Faust, Justin Haynes, and William Faust, along with numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Arminda Haynes, and his siblings: Effie Haynes Mathews, William Haynes, Eva Haynes Iverson, Elva Haynes Parker, Cleveland Haynes, Hoyt Haynes, Chandler Haynes, Paschal Haynes, Enos Haynes and Enoch Haynes; and several nieces and nephews.


Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Byrd Funeral Home and also from 10 to 11 am Friday, October 10, prior to the service. Funeral services will begin at 11 am Friday at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street with Rev. Mike Golson officiating. Graveside services will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing.
