Douglas "Doug" Cole

Douglas Cole, fondly known as Doug, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 24, 2023, in his hometown of Dothan, Alabama. Born on February 9, 1948, Doug was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His life was marked by intelligence, faith, and selflessness. Traits that endeared him to all who knew him.

Doug was born in Moody Hospital in Dothan, Alabama to John Wesley Cole and Mylan Marchman Cole, and proudly called the Wiregrass area his home for the entirety of his life. He was a graduate of Dale County High School class of 1966, where he established a reputation for his keen sense of humor and unwavering dedication. After high school, Doug went on to obtain an associate degree from Wallace Community College.

Doug’s life took a romantic turn when he met JoAnn Hall at Napier Field Methodist Church. They dated for two years before tying the knot, marking the beginning of a beautiful 57-year long journey together. The couple was blessed with two children, Johnathon Cole and Kimberly Andrews, who grew up to be the pride and joy of their father’s life. Doug’s love for his family extended to his grandchildren, siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews, who all survive him.

In addition to his parents John and Mylan Cole, he is preceded in death by his twin brother, David Cole.

Survivors include his loving wife, JoAnn Hall Cole; children, Johnathon Cole and Kimberley (Blake) Andrews; beloved grandchildren, Hannah Nicole Harper, Joshua Kevin Harper, and Johnathon Garner Cole; siblings, Linda (Edgar) Jones, Dianne (Ronnie) Forrester, Dennis (Sandra) Cole, and Allen (Clairece) Cole.

Doug’s dedication and commitment to service were evident when he enlisted in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He served honorably until he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. His service to the nation is a testament to his courage and selflessness, qualities he carried throughout his life.

After his military service, Doug returned to Alabama where he pursued training in electronics and telecommunications. He then embarked on a career with the State of Alabama, and later the State of Georgia. His career then led him to Alabama Power where he worked in the Headland office, the Eufaula office, and finally Farley Nuclear Plant. There, he retired after 29 years of faithful service.

His commitment to his community extended to his spiritual life as well. Doug was a faithful member of Corinth Free Will Baptist Church, where he was known for his unwavering faith and dedication to service.

Doug was an ardent Alabama football fan. His passion for the game was infectious, and he was known to light up any room when discussing his favorite team. He also cherished the tranquility of fishing at Lake Eufaula, hunting, tailgating at the University of Alabama football games, and he found immense joy in traveling with his family. These interests brought him happiness and created lasting memories for his loved ones. Doug enjoyed traveling with his wife to Spain, Italy, Germany, France, London, Scottland, Austria, the UK, Hawaii, Branson, Missouri, and Alaska. He also enjoyed traveling and making memories with his friends on Southern Touch Bus Tours, cruising, and RVing.

Douglas “Doug” Cole was more than a devoted family man, a brave serviceman, and hardworking individual. He was a beacon of intelligence, faith, and selflessness, who touched the lives of those around him. His memory will be cherished, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
