Dr. Elkanah George Burson, Jr.

Dr. Elkanah George Burson, Jr. went to sleep after a day spent happily with his children, grandchildren and great grandchild and peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 22, 2011.  He was born July 4, 1918, the only son of Dr. Elkanah George and Elizabeth Knight Burson in Furman, Wilcox County, Alabama. His two sisters, Elliece Tucker and Elizabeth Hart preceded him in death.

Dr. Burson graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He received his medical degree from Tulane University and went immediately into the United States Army Medical Corps where he was trained as an anesthesiologist and served as a Captain in Leyte during World War II.

When he returned to the United States, he was stationed at Oliver General in Augusta, Georgia, where he met Brewton girl, Jean Gillis. He remembered the first time he saw her and said when she walked through the door of that officer’s club he thought, “She was the prettiest girl I had ever seen.”  They were married for 63 years before she preceded him in death on July 16, 2010.

Dr. Burson practiced medicine in Dothan for 42 years (1947 to 1989) beginning his practice in an office above Dothan Drug on Main Street and then at 819 South Oates.

Dr. Burson leaves the wonderful legacy of a loving and devoted father to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren: daughters Sharman Ramsey (Joel) and Dr. Sylvia Rushing (Tom), son Elkanah George Burson, III (Debbie); grandchildren Cecily Butterworth (Steve),  Andrew Ramsey (Brittany), and Brooke Evans (Mike); Hannah, Rebecca, Mallory and Ellie Burson; great grandchildren Lily Butterworth, Megan Evans, and George Ramsey.

A graveside service will be held at Palmer Cemetery in Furman, Alabama on Saturday, December 24 at 12:00 PM.  Friends will be welcomed at Wakefield following the service.

Dr. Burson was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Burson’s favorite charity was the Red Cross and requested that donations be made to that charity upon his death.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to constant friends John and Nagel Byrd, Miriam Williams, Reverend Freeman, Dr. Frank Crocket, Covenant Hospice, and his devoted sitters Kamilla, Dana, Tina, Ruby, Red, and Lashanna.
