Dr. Gilbert Lee McDonough passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on March 19, 2022 in Enterprise, AL. Gilbert was born to Flora Elizabeth and John C. McDonough in Washington, PA, on March 5, 1935.

He lived his childhood through high school graduation in Bentleyville, PA.  Gilbert attended Abilene Christian College in Abilene, TX where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and met his future wife, Eleanor Faye Autrey of Greenville, AL. They married shortly after college and moved to Philadelphia, PA where Gilbert graduated from Jefferson Medical College. Their first son and daughter were born during this time.

The family moved to Columbus, GA in order for Gilbert to complete a Surgery Internship at Ft. Benning with the Army for a year. Their second son was born during that year. The next move was to Augusta, GA for Gilbert’s 4+ years of OB-GYN residency at the Medical College of Georgia while stationed at Ft. Gordon with the Army. Here their second daughter arrived.

As Gilbert transferred branches of the military to the Air Force, the family moved to Montgomery, AL. He practiced at Maxwell Air Force Base and moonlighted at St. Jude’s Hospital for 4 years. He transitioned into private practice in the summer of 1971 as they moved to Selma, AL.

In 1983, they moved to Enterprise, AL where Gilbert was in private practice again for 27 years until he retired in 2010. Gilbert and Faye have lived in Enterprise for a total of 39 years. He was an OB-GYN for almost 50 years of his life and welcomed thousands of babies into this world, and at his retirement was the oldest practicing OB-GYN in the state of Alabama.

Gilbert was a Christian man known for his friendliness to all, his patience and humility, and his desire for all to know God and the only true peace that comes through Him. He was hard-working and known for his love of outdoor running. He had an incredible memory and enjoyed learning history, especially military history.

Gilbert is survived by his wife Faye McDonough and his four children; John McDonough of San Antonio, TX, Wendy Dawkins of Battle Ground, WA, David McDonough of Enterprise, AL and Angela Giddens of Enterprise, AL. He is also survived by his sister, Imogene Aebi of Vincent, OH and 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
