Peacefully and with his wife and son by his side, Dr. Hashim Jaber Hassan passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the age of 80.
Dr. Hassan was born on November 23, 1943, in Basrah, Iraq to the late Jaber Hassan and Matuka Tahir. Following High School, he attended The Baghdad Dental College graduating in 1967. In 1971 he arrived in the United States to study for his Oral Surgery Degree at The University of Alabama Birmingham School of Dentistry, finishing in 1975. While in Birmingham he met and later married Diane Saliba of Dothan. Shortly after they were married, they returned to Iraq and lived for the 17 years.
During his years in Iraq, Dr. Hassan served as the Dean of the University of Baghdad School of Dentistry and President of Mustansiriyah University. He served as the President of the Iraqi Dental Association and President of the Iraqi Scientific Institute and Scientific Research. He was head of the Iraqi committee of scholarships who sent hundreds of doctors and dentist abroad to study and receive medical post graduate and advanced training. Dr. Hassan was instrumental in expanding the University of Baghdad College of Dentistry and Mustansiriyah University. He was instrumental in building Iraq’s high education throughout the mid 1970’s until the early 1980’s. He was in private practice in Baghdad from 1983 until he moved back to the United States in 1994. He then attended the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Dentistry from 1996 until 1999 to receive his license to practice Dentistry and Oral Surgery in the United States. Once he received his DMD degree, he opened his own practice, Hassan Oral Surgery, in 1999 where he practiced until his death.
Along with his parents, Dr. Hashim is preceded in death by one brother, Ghuter Hassan.
Leaving to cherish many memories is his wife of 49 years, Dr. Diane Saliba Hassan, his only son, Dr. Mohammed Hassan, 3 sisters, (Hashima Hassan, LaBeba Hassan and Fayha Hassan) and one brother, (Jabar Hassan).
Visitation will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday November 23, 2024, from 12:00PM until 2:00PM with a Graveside service immediately following.
