Dr. James Curtis Wells, age 89, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on October 25, 2014 in Nashville, TN. After living in Ashford and Dothan, Al Dr. and Mrs. Wells moved to Nashville in 2012 to be close to family.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Martha Jean Nordan Wells; his children James Curtis Wells, Jr. (Patty) of Montgomery, Al. and David Christopher Wells (Eleanor) of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, David Wells (Meredith), John Wells (Alayna), and Katie Wells; and great-grandchildren, Henry Wells and Eliza Wells.
Dr. Wells was born on December 20, 1924 to the late Webster Ulysses Wells and Kate Webb Wells in Ashford, Al. After graduation from high school he continued his education at the University of Alabama where he earned his undergraduate degree; he then attended Emory University School of Dentistry where he obtained his DDS. After a brief period as a faculty member at Emory he returned to Ashford to begin his fifty-year practice of dentistry.
Dr. Wells served in many leadership positions in the Lions Club including representing his district at an international meeting. He also served on the board of directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank as well as AmSouth. For many years he was a member of the UAB School of Dentistry scholarship committee as well as an active member of the Alabama Dental Association.
A charter member of Wayside Baptist Church and in more recent years a member of Ridgecrest Baptist, Dr. Wells loved serving the church as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He also was passionate about Alabama football and enjoyed going to games for many years.
Funeral services will be at 2pm Friday, October 31, 2014 at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memory Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Dothan, the Alzheimer's Association or a hospice of one’s choice.
