Dr. Robert Franklin (Bob) Zumstein, died at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City, Alabama, on May 21, 2019, at the age of 85.
Funeral services for Dr. Zumstein will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 25, 2019, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home and Cremations in Ozark with Reverend Chad Ingle officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ozark Friday evening from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
Dr. Zumstein was born on May 28, 1933 in Wartburg, Tennessee to the late Clarence Fredrick Zumstein and Violet Rosina Heidel Zumstein. A graduate of Wartburg’s Central High School, he attended The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on a football scholarship. He completed his medical degree in 1958 at The University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis, where he was a member of Phi Chi Fraternity. Following an internship at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, he established a private practice in Ariton, Alabama; he served Ariton and the surrounding community for 43 years. In addition to his affiliation with Dale Medical Center, he enjoyed tennis and avidly supported The University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Ariton Purple Cats in all their athletic endeavors. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Ozark, Alabama.
Dr. Zumstein is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mavis Wilson Zumstein; daughters, Nancy Becker, M.D., (Michael) and Carolyn Murphy (John); son, James Zumstein, M.D., (Doris); grandchildren, Allison Zumstein, Kyle Zumstein and Jamie Zumstein; sisters, Carolyn Hunter and Marilyn Baggett; brother, Ron Zumstein; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence Frederick and Violet Heidel Zumstein; and brothers, Charles and William Zumstein. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Lamar Carden and the Staffs of Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital as well as Dale Medical Center and Dale Medical Center Home Health.
