Dr. Roberta D. Hyers, PhD, a resident of Ozark, died Friday, June 29, 2018, at her home. She was eighty-two years old.


Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 3, 2018, from the First United Methodist Church of Ozark with Reverend Michael Sigler, Reverend Bobbi Lassiter, and Reverend Dr. Billy D. Gaither officiating, Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ozark Monday from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M.


Dr. Hyers was born February 16, 1936 in Blackshear, Georgia to the late Robert Willis Dixon and Ruth Ethel Johnson Dixon.  She grew up in Palatka, Florida.  Dr. Hyers earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida; her Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of Louisville; and her Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of South Florida.  Dr. Hyers and her husband lived in many different locations including seven years in Germany while he served in the United States Army. She had lived in Ozark for the past twenty-five years where she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Ozark.  She was a Master Gardener and past president, served on the Library Board, and was past president of the Friends of the Library.


Survivors include her husband, COL James Earl Hyers (United States Army, Retired) of Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Don Moore of Suwanee, Georgia; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bruce and Mel Hyers of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, David M. Hyers of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandchildren, Ryan Moore, Melissa Moore, and Tyler Hyers; one sister, Mary Ciesinski of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; and one niece, Fern Hatzenbuhler.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ozark, Organ Fund, 167 East Broad Street, Ozark, Alabama 36360; Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607; or to the American Kidney Fund, 11921  Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville,  Maryland  20852.
