Dr. Tony Wendell Dollar, of Dothan, died November 20, 2018, at the age of 75 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, after an extended illness.

A native of Valley, AL, Dr. Dollar was a graduate of Valley High School, where he was president of the student council. He received his B.S. from Samford University in 1965, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and ODK Honorary. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Alabama School of Dentistry at Birmingham, where he served as president of both the freshman and sophomore classes. Dr. Dollar served in the U.S. Navy, including a year with the First Marine Aircraft Wing in Vietnam. In 1971, he opened his dental practice in Dothan. Most recently, he served on the Dean’s Advisory Council at the dental school.

Dr. Dollar loved his patients, and they loved him. He made going to the dentist fun! His sense of humor was his trademark, but he was also known by those who knew him best to be extraordinarily thoughtful and sentimental. Whether playing the harmonica or piano, it was not uncommon for him to surprise his loved ones with a spontaneous serenade. In addition to fighting cavities for 44 years, Tony was renowned for his being a world class smoker of ribs, an indefatigable handyman, a connoisseur of Malvern tomatoes, a relocator of squirrels and chipmunks, and a lover of all things Crimson Tide.

Dr. Dollar was married to his high school sweetheart, Linda, for 52 years. He took extreme pride in his family. In addition to his wife, Dr. Dollar is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Amy Dollar, and grandsons, Thomas and Anthony of Birmingham. He is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Brantley and Jaime Gaitan, and grandsons, Jonah, Jeremy and Joshua of Phoenix, AZ.

Dr. Dollar was preceeded in death by his parents, Winford and Lucille Dollar of Valley, AL, and brother, Mason Winford Dollar of Auburn, AL.
