WEBB…Dr. William Durwood Knowles, a resident of Webb, died early Thursday morning, July 8, 2021, in a Dothan hospital. He was 81.

   Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 10, 2021, in the Center Baptist Church Cemetery near Webb, with Dr. Jimmy Ray Smith, Dr. Jerry Windsor and Reverend Bob Gross officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the service.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Samford University Orlean Beeson School of Education, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229.

   Dr. Knowles was born and reared in Houston County, near Webb, son of the late Rev. William Hollis Knowles and Thelma Marie Deese Knowles. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted and served ten years in the United States Navy and during the Vietnam War. Dr. Knowles attended Samford University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree. He received a Master’s Degree in Theology from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Knowles later received a Doctor of Ministry from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a licensed Professional Counselor in Alabama and Georgia. Dr. Knowles served as a Baptist Minister in Alabama and Kentucky and served as a Professional Counselor in Georgia and Dothan. He also served with the Baptist Student Unions at Auburn University and the University of Alabama. Dr. Knowles was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan where he taught the Barbaree-Knowles Sunday School Class for fifteen years. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry M. Knowles and Mickey Knowles.

   Surviving relatives include his wife, Dr. Julie Wauthena Nall Knowles; a brother, Dr. William A. “Bill” Knowles (Dianna), Graceville, FL; a sister-in-law, Linda Bridges Knowles Sims, Columbia; several nieces and nephews.
