HEADLAND. . .Durell Whiddon, a resident of Headland, died early Sunday morning, April 25, 2021, in Westside Terrace in Dothan. He was 95.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 27, 2021, in the Headland United Methodist Church with Reverend Misty Barrett and Reverend Homer Davis, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the Family Life Center of the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland United Methodist Church, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Mr. Whiddon was born and reared near Ashford, son of the late Freddie Whiddon and Willie Lee King Whiddon. He was a 1945 graduate of Ashford High School. He attended the University of Alabama where he received a Bachelor’s Degree and a Juris Doctorate Degree. Mr. Whiddon served in the U. S. Army from 1946 until 1947 and also from 1951 until 1952 during the Korean War. In 1952, he entered into the practice of law with G. D. Halstead and was a practicing attorney in Henry County until he retired in 2018. During those years, he served as Attorney for the City of Headland, Assistant District Attorney for Henry County, Counsel for the Alabama Power Company and the Headland Housing Authority. Mr. Whiddon served as a Past President for the Henry County Bar Association and was a founding Director of the Wiregrass Bank & Trust Company. He was an active member of the Headland United Methodist Church where he served on various committees, taught Sunday School, and was a longtime member of the Curry Woods Men’s Bible Class. His civic activities included being a member of the Headland Kiwanis Club since 1952, serving as President and District Lieutenant Governor. He also served as Chairman and Treasurer of the Henry County Association for the Disabled for over thirty years and was a founding Director of the Headland Country Club. Mr. Whiddon served as a Past President of the Headland PTA, Headland Athletic Association, the Headland Chamber of Commerce and was a past recipient of Headland’s Man of the Year. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kate McGriff Whiddon, a sister, Doris Freeman and a brother, Wilburn Whiddon.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Lisa Slaker (Jeff), and Linda Padget (Chris), all of Headland; a son, Bobby Hamil (Michelle), Headland; two sisters, Louise Efurd, Avon, AL; and Deloris Tedder (Larry), Ashford; a brother, Joel Whiddon (Jeannie), Lakeland, FL; six grandchildren, Allison Lovell (Jacob), Rachel Hamil, Brent Slaker (Katie), Nick Slaker and Jamey Padget (Ashley) and Haley Smith (Chase); six great-grandchildren, Hudson Smith, Martha Kate Smith, Jonathan Slaker, David Slaker, Grady Padget, and Tommy Lovell; and a sister-in-law, Jeanine Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be family members. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Curry Woods Men’s Bible Class.
