Durwood Elton Hawkins, Sr., a resident of Midland City, Alabama passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 at his daughter’s home in Pittsview, Alabama. He was 93.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 2 pm at Mount Zion Assembly of God Church in Midland City, Alabama with Pastor Max McKinney and Pastor Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory with Robert Byrd directing. Family will receive friends at the church for 1 hour prior to the service.
Mr. Hawkins was born on August 30, 1924 in Dale County and lived in Midland City most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his military service, he was employed at Fort Rucker as an aircraft mechanic for about 40 years until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Hawkins enjoyed the outdoors and loved to fish. He was mechanically inclined and was always tinkering on lawn mowers, tillers, cars and most anything with a motor. Mr. Hawkins was a member of Mt. Zion Assembly of God Church for over 60 years.
Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by his wife, Daphne Hawkins; and his son, Durwood Elton Hawkins, Jr.; his parents, Loys L. and Causie Mae Hawkins; a brother, Dayton Hawkins; and his sisters, Hildred Tucker and Virginia Williams.
Survivors include his daughter, Delaine H. (Earl) Spencer; and his nieces and nephew, Betty Barrett, Debbie Norwalk and Gerald Hartzog.
