Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dicky McAllister officiating. Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Heritage Baptist Church, Ridgecrest Baptist Church, or the Columbia Baptist Association.
Born March 24, 1922, Earline was a graduate of the first class from the “new” Dothan High School. From there she went on to graduate from Riley Business College and was recruited from there to work in the War Department in Washington, D.C. On the way to D.C., December 6 &7, 1941 by train, the new recruits heard of Pearl Harbor and reported to work the next day to the War Department. While living in Washington, she met a young machinist named Raymond Sayler from Thurmont, MD. When the War Department was moved to Detroit, MI for security reasons, Raymond missed her so much he came there, took her across the river to Windsor, Canada and proposed to her. They were married April 24, 1943 at the home of her parents, Hoyt and Vera.
After a few years in the Washington-Baltimore area, Earline and Raymond moved back to Dothan in 1947. When the first two boys got old enough, Earline went to work at Headstrom. In the meantime, they bought their first home on Morgan Street. Earline and Raymond had been members of First Baptist Church, but upon moving to that part of town, they became part of what was then the Ridgecrest Baptist Mission; charter members of today’s Ridgecrest Baptist Church. There she was a WMU officer, teacher, committee member, etc.
Earline and Raymond then moved west of town and built a new house on Ginna Lou Drive. She helped Raymond start his new business, Sayler Auto and Trailer, next door. After the second two boys were old enough, Earline became the Secretary for the Columbia Baptist Association. While there she was active in the Alabama Baptist Secretaries Conference and the Alabama Baptist WMU. They then moved their membership to Heritage Baptist Church to be closer to their house and help in relocation. She was also active in many phases of this church.
Earline loved her children and was proud that all five earned college degrees. She also loved her extended family from Cottonwood to Maryland. She never seemed to meet a stranger or forget a friend. She kept a book of everyone’s addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays. And everyone knows she made the best pinwheel cookies in the world! Earline lived the last eight years in Tuscaloosa, AL at Clara Verna Towers and near Fairhope, AL, both near family members.
Earline was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Raymond; her son, Rodney; and her brothers, Ray and Rex.
She is survived by her sons, Greg of Fairhope, AL, Hoyt of Abita Springs, LA, and Steve of Destin, FL; her daughter, Rebecca McKinney of Hendersonville, TN; her sister, June Clements of Enterprise, AL; ten grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
