ABBEVILLE. . .Earnest Lee Greene, (Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army, Retired), a resident of Abbeville, died Friday afternoon, October 4, 2024, in a Dothan hospital. He was 89.


            Graveside services, with full military honors, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in the Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery, 64 County Road 3350, Troy, Alabama, with Reverend Wilburn Kirkland officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Safe Haven Animal Rescue Kennels (S.H.A.R.K.) P.O. Box 126, Abbeville, AL 36310.


            Mr. Greene was born in Columbus, Georgia, son of the late Lenwood Greene and Johnnie Colwell Greene. He served in the U. S. Army twenty-one years and retired with rank of Lieutenant Colonel after having served two tours of duty in Vietnam. While serving in the military, Mr. Greene received the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Greene received a Masters Degree from Boston University. After retirement from the Army, Mr. Greene was employed at Dothan High School from 1979 until 1994 as the J.R.O.T.C. Instructor. Mr. Greene and his wife travelled extensively throughout the world. He loved animals, enjoyed fishing, and his greatest love was trains both travelling across the United States and Europe. At his residence, Mr. Greene had a room designated specifically for trains where he laid out his own trains. He was an avid Alabama football fan and had three children who attended the University of Alabama. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Greene Burch, a son, Durwood “Woody” Greene, a brother, Harold Greene and a grandson, James Benjamin Greene and a special friend, Frank Reames.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Jane Benton Greene, a son, Lee Greene, Abbeville; grandchildren, Joey Greene, Ben Greene, Matt Greene and Maureen Zimmerman, eleven great-grandchildren.; and a daughter-in-law, Jo Ellen Greene, several nieces and nephews.
