Earnest McCoy

Earnest “Saigon” McCoy, a man whose name was synonymous with courage, friendliness, and an unyielding love for life, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Born in Ashford, Alabama, on March 5, 1947, Earnest's early years were split between his birthplace and Louisville, Kentucky, where he was raised by his God parents, Willie and Minnie Lee Simmons. He was a beacon of light in the lives of those who knew him, and his legacy is one of joy, service, and unwavering spirit.

Earnest's life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit. He bravely served his country in the US Army as a Vietnam Veteran, after obtaining his high school equivalency diploma from Grimsley High School in 1968, on two assignments, Guam and temporary duty at three locations in Korea. He not only dedicated himself to the protection of others but also served as a Chaplain, bomb specialist, military intelligence officer, demolition quartermaster, and infantry. His commitment to his country was matched only by his commitment to his fellow soldiers, as he provided spiritual guidance and support during some of the most challenging times. When he was discharged in April of 1977, he received six medals for his service to his country, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam service medal, the Vietnam Campaign medal, the Armed Forces, Expeditionary Medal, the Cross of Gallantry, and the Purple Heart.

After his honorable military service, Earnest continued to touch lives as a social butterfly who never met a stranger. He had a magnetic personality, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life was remarkable. Whether he was out dancing to the rhythms of good music or engaging in heartfelt conversations, Earnest spread joy effortlessly. He was the life of the party, and his presence was a source of comfort and happiness to everyone around him. Before moving to Kentucky and after his service to his country, he was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Ashford, AL.

At the heart of Earnest's world was his beloved family. He shared 39 beautiful years with his wife, Velma McCoy, and was a loving father to his daughter, Velesia (Patrick) Hinch. As a grandfather to Khaiya, Zaire, Azariel, and Netjer Todd, he instilled values of courage and kindness. His sister, Eunice McCoy, also held a special place in his life, and together they shared an unbreakable bond. He is also survived by his brother in law,Oscar Underwood; three sister in laws, Mrs. Lula McCoy, Mrs. Mary Rene McCoy, and Mrs. Gracie Lee McCoy; as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was reunited with his parents, Mr. Mack and Essie Mae Mccoy; his brothers, Milton Lewis McCoy, Mack Nelson McCoy, Willie McCoy, and John Edward McCoy; as well as three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Lee Frazier, Mrs. Ella Fair Cook, and Mrs. Pauline Underwood.

As we reflect on Earnest's life, let us remember a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that he held dear: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a bit better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Earnest McCoy undoubtedly succeeded by this measure, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a world made infinitely better by his presence.

In life, Earnest taught us the power of a friendly smile, the importance of a kind word, and the immeasurable value of family. His legacy is one of love and friendship, and his memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to Earnest McCoy, let us carry forward the light that he shone so brightly, and let us live our lives with the same courage, friendliness, and love that he embodied every day.
