Edward Elton Tomlin passed away early Friday evening, July 18, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.   He was 68.  Funeral services will be held Monday, July 21, 2014, at 10 a.m. from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Reverend Timothy Davis and Reverend William Todd officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Tomlin was born in Ariton, Alabama, on Sunday, July 7, 1946 to the late James Elton and Alice Thelma Carr Tomlin. Elton was a lifelong resident of the Marley Mill community and a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where for many years he and Linda enjoyed serving on the youth committee. He spent 40 years in the printing industry. Whether you called him ET, Akin, or PopPop, to know him was to love him and he touched the lives of so many. He always put God and family first and took pride in kindness, humility and standing up for what was right. A powerful example of this is when as newlyweds, and without means, Elton and Linda took in two of Linda's younger brothers, raising them through the crucial foundational teenage years. He loved nature and the outdoors, most of all fishing. In recent years he enjoyed part time work at Parts & Service and absolutely loved working at Golden Peanut with his cousin, Terry and all of his other buddies. Other hobbies and interests included woodworking, and a lifelong love of the music and muscle cars of his generation.

Although 68 may seem relatively young now, and it's never easy to give up the ones we love, those close to him realize what a gift it was to reach this point. Upon being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in early 2004, it was unknown how long he would have and how many family memories and milestones he would get to share. After undergoing a successful bone marrow transplant (BMT) at UAB that fall, he shared almost another decade with family, loved ones, and his canine companion Max. Highlights included children's graduations, weddings, 60th birthday celebrations, and perhaps most of all the birth and early years of two wonderful grandsons and the continuation of a family name.

Elton is survived by his wife of almost 42 years, Linda Powell Tomlin of Ozark; sons, Wesley Elton Tomlin of Ozark, and Benjamin Blake Tomlin, and wife, Stephan, of Alexander City; brother, Stanley Tomlin, and wife, Dian, of Dawson, Georgia; brothers-in-law, Larry Powell, Bobby Powell, and wife, Mary, Robert Powell; sisters-in-law, Debbie Powell, Lesa Powell; aunt, Maxine Tomlin Danner; grandsons, Miles James Tomlin and Ridge Benjamin Tomlin; several cousins, nephews, and nieces.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Elton's name to the Children's Harbor, at 1 Our Children's Highway, Alexander City, AL 35010, or childrensharbor.com.

Serving as pallbearers will be Lamar Tomlin, Lee Peters, Scott Tomlin, Terry Tomlin, Dwight Patrick, Don Ezell, Melvin Peters, and Jim Snellgrove.
