EDWARD HOLWERDA
HEADLAND, Edward Holwerda, a resident of Headland, AL, died early Tuesday morning, March 4, 2014, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility in Abbeville. He was 89.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 7, 2014, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Friday at the mortuary in Headland, AL. A family visitation will be held at Zaagman’s Memorial Chapel with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Grand Rapids, MI.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Headland “Bridge To Tomorrow” Building Fund, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Mr. Holwerda was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, March 11, 1924, son of the late Jacob Holwerda and Jenie Wyngarden Holwerda. At an early age, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy Air Corps and served his country during World War II as a 2nd Lieutenant. Mr. Holwerda received a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. and retired from Jim Walter Research as a Mechanical Engineer. Mr. Holwerda lived in Berwyn, Pennsylvania before moving to Headland in 1999 where he was affiliated with the First Baptist Church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Jerone Smith Holwerda, a resident of the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility, formerly of Headland AL; two daughters, Andrea Holwerda Simpson (Steve), Georgetown, GA; Elizabeth Holwerda Bass (Kevin), Warner Robins, GA; a son, David J. Holwerda (Mary), Grand Rapids, MI; a step-daughter, Yulonda Nesiba (Bruce), Headland AL; a step-son, Mickey Miller (Leta), Simi Valley, CA; a sister, Fran VandenBurg, North Augusta, S.C.; a brother, Frank Holwerda, Clarksville, MI; six grandchildren, Matthew J. Dalgarn, Jesse D. Holwerda, Nicole L. Holwerda, Lindsey L. Bass, Evan E. Bass, and Cameron P. Bass; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
