Edwin (Ed) Lawrence Stephenson, Jr., age 69, of Dothan, Alabama, was called into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.
Ed was born in Birmingham, AL, the only child of Edwin Stephenson, Sr. and Francis McGarity Stephenson. He graduated Ensley High School in 1965. He attended the University of Montevallo for two years, just long enough to fall in love with Gail Brock Stephenson, whom he married on December 20, 1967. After earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University in 1970, he worked for several years at the Navy Shipyard in Charleston, SC before moving to Dothan, AL in 1974 to begin his 36 year career at Farley Nuclear Plant. After retirement, Ed continued to work as a consultant at nuclear plants around the Southeast.
Ed was a man of many talents and interests. He loved God’s creation and His good gifts. He loved hiking, boating, fishing, and skiing. He loved science, art, and music (especially jazz). For those that knew Ed, he was a faithful husband and father, a loyal friend, and great conversationalist for anyone that was privileged to meet him.
He was the leader of The Ed Stephenson Group, a jazz combo, in Dothan for many years playing for weddings, shows, dances and parties. Ed faithfully served as a deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church with a passion for missions. His heart for the world led him to serve with Proclaim International (http://weproclaim.blogspot.com/) for 21 years of missions work in dozens of countries around the world.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Gail Brock Stephenson; two children and their spouses, Edwin (Tracey) Stephenson and Amy Krista (Andrew) Spear, and 8 grandchildren.
A visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 3012 W. Main St. in Dothan. The family will greet friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. followed by a memorial service at 2:00 P.M. The burial service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Proclaim International online at (http://weproclaim.blogspot.com/) or at P.O. Box 56888, Jacksonville, FL 32241.
