Eleanor Carol Williams, 92, a resident of Dothan passed away peacefully Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Extendicare Health and Rehab.
Funeral services will be 3 pm Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Lynn Nesbitt officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 pm until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Rd., Dothan, AL, 36303, or to your favorite charity.
Ms. Williams was born in Graceville, FL to the late Waller Curtis and Inez Box Williams on February 21, 1921. She graduated from Graceville High School and attended Bowling Green College. She worked in Tampa and Marianna, FL before moving to Montgomery, AL to work for the Internal Revenue Service where she remained for 13 years. She later joined the staff of Senator Lister Hill and moved to Washington, DC in 1958 where Senator Hill was Chairman of the Senate Labor and Public Welfare Committee. After the Senator’s retirement in 1968, she continued to work for the sub-committee on Health, Education and Welfare, until her retirement in 1979.
After retirement, she traveled extensively, played Bridge, and stayed in contact with numerous friends. She had a passion for the visual arts and visited many museums and exhibits. She served as a volunteer at the Foundry United Methodist Church, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and enjoyed membership in the National Democratic Women’s Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mary Lou Williams, Ouida Williams Merritt Sanders, June Williams Bryant and her brother Curtis Owen Williams.
She is survived by her nieces, Kathryn Merritt Foster (Tom), Headland, AL, and Melissa Merritt Bible (James) Ellerslie, GA; her nephews, John Byron Merritt (Ann), Newton, GA and Charles Michael Merritt (Anita), Phenix City, AL, and Randolph Williams Bryant (Sandra), Houston, TX.
