Elizabeth Anne Harpe Starling, a resident of Abbeville, entered into the Kingdom of Heaven, Wednesday afternoon, December 20, 2017, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 22, 2017, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Ryan Johnson and Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Friday in the First Baptist Church Family Life Building,

Mrs. Starling was born on September 13, 1937, daughter of the late John Thomas and Anna Bird Boatwright Harpe. She was a 1955 graduate of Abbeville High School, and was Miss Abbeville 1953. Mrs. Starling worked at Ft. Rucker Army Post in earlier years and then attended Troy University. After receiving a Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree in Education, she was employed by the Henry County Board of Education for 18 years. During her teaching career she taught fourth grade and then later eighth grade English, and was named Henry County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Starling was a member of the Abbeville Matrons Club and the Wine Between the Lines book club. She was a former member of the Appris Study Guild, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a creative writers group, and the Wiregrass Art League. She also served on the Abbeville Library Board. Mrs. Starling was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for many years. She was an avid reader, accomplished artist, and enjoyed teaching art lessons in Abbeville.
Mrs. Starling was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Thomas Gene Starling; a brother, Jesse Harpe; a sister-in-law, Annette Duke; brothers-in-law, Tommy Duke and Charlie Starling.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Cindy Phillips and Son-in-law, Sam Phillips; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Hayes (Joshua), Samuel Phillips, and Caroline Rainey (Billy); sisters-in-law, Jean Starling and Joan Harpe. Special double-first-cousins; Jackey Harpe (Cleta), Rose Harpe Perry, and Lamar Harpe (Helen); many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Samuel Phillips, Billy Rainey, Jason Harpe, Jeff Stepanovich, John Espy, Sonny Marshall, and Drew Harpe. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Abbeville Matrons Club, book club, and Sunday school class.
